<한국어 받아쓰기 시험: 다음을 듣고 따라쓰시오>는 제주 토박이 할머니가 당신의 손녀에게 할머니의 지나온 제주에서의 삶에 대해 이야기하는 것을 녹음한 후, 이를 바탕으로 외국어 듣기평가 형식으로 변환하여 제작한 영상 작업이다. 한국어는 단일어라 교육받았던 표준어 사용자인 ‘내’가 듣기 평가 형식으로 이들의 이야기를 받아쓰기 시험을 시도한다. 할머니와 대화를 나누었던 손녀의 이야기를 유추해보면, 해녀였던 할머니의 바다의 삶과 농사일 이야기인 듯 하나, 받아쓰기에 참여한 ‘나’로서는 정확한 이야기는 알 수 없다. 이를 통해서 한국어가 단일어라 배워오고 믿어왔던 것에 질문을 던지고자 하였다. 언어는 하나의 은유로 일상 속에서 당연하다고 여겨왔던 것들에 숨어있는 경계, ‘내’ 안에서 경계를 만드는 것들에 대해 의심을 해보고자 한다.
'Korean Dictation Test: You Will Have to Answer Questions What You Hear' is a video work based on a recording of a Jeju native grandmother telling her grandchild about the life she has lived on Jeju Island. The recording is reconfigured in the form of a foreign-language listening test. Within this framework, the observing “I” — a speaker of standard Korean who was taught to understand Korean as a single and unified language — attempts to transcribe their conversation through dictation.
From the grandchild’s side of the exchange, it can be inferred that the grandmother is speaking about her life at sea as a haenyeo, alongside stories of agricultural labor. However, for the “I” taking part in the dictation exercise, the exact meaning of the story cannot be fully grasped. In this way, the work calls into question the belief, long taught and widely accepted, that Korean is a singular language and Korea is mono-lingual country.
Language here operates as a metaphor for examining the boundaries hidden within what is considered self-evident in everyday life, and for questioning the forces that construct such boundaries within the self.
