<무너지는 기호들>에서는 광둥어를 중심으로 홍콩의 언어 상황에 초점을 맞춰서 영상을 풀어간다. 홍콩의 광동어의 언어 변화 상황을 사람들의 기억을 통해 수집하고, 이를 홍콩 영화 속 노래라는 상징으로 풀어낸다. 언제 쓰러질 지 모르는 젠가처럼. 이들의 이야기는 비단 대만과 홍콩의 이야기가 아닌, 근대사를 거친 아시아의 이야기이자, 우리의 이야기이다. <무너지는 기호들>에서는 자막을 사용하지 않는데, 이는 언어가 사라진 후, 그 언어만이 표현할 수 있는 지혜들도 사라짐을 의미한다. 언어가 사라진 후, 그 언어를 모르는 관객은 그것이 무슨 의미인지 알 수 없을 것이다.
'Collapsing Signs' unfolds through a focus on the linguistic landscape of Hong Kong, centering on Cantonese. It gathers memories of the changes taking place in Hong Kong’s Cantonese-speaking community and expresses them through the symbolic motif of songs from Hong Kong cinema—like a game of Jenga that could collapse at any moment. These stories are not merely about Taiwan and Hong Kong; they are also stories of Asia shaped by modern history, and ultimately, our own stories.
The work deliberately avoids subtitles. This absence suggests that when a language disappears, the forms of knowledge and sensibility that only that language can carry disappear with it. Once a language is lost, those who do not know it can no longer fully grasp what it meant.
