'You Will Have to Follow the Directions You Hear' is an exhibition centered on the Jeju language. In the work 'Korean Dictation Test: You Will Have to Answer Questions What You Hear', the observing "I"—a speaker of standard Korean who has long regarded Korean as a singular language—attempts to dictate spoken Jeju. Although Jeju is often treated merely as a "dialect," the narrator quickly realizes it is entirely unintelligible to them.
Meanwhile, 'The Perfect Harmony' shows that the Jeju language, much like the traditional profession of the haenyeo (Korean female divers), is gradually disappearing and becoming fossilized. The work interweaves the divers' labor songs with images of vanishing people and fading voices. Through these explorations, the exhibition opens a rift in the certainties we have long taken for granted.
